Yellow alert issued at Himachal Pradesh / A yellow signal has been issued by the IMD for isolated thunderstorms with lightning in several portions of Himachal Pradesh on April 22 and 23.

According to the state emergency operation center, snow and rain on Saturday caused up to 104 roads and three national highways to be shut in Himachal Pradesh.

According to the statistics made public, 99 routes in Lahaul and Spiti, three in Kullu, one in Chamba, and one in Kangra have all been closed.

The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority went on to say that rain in Kangra had caused a bridge to beheaved away. According to an official statement, “the new bridge is likely to be constructed by this month.”

In the meantime, a yellow signal has been issued by the India Meteorological Department for isolated thunderstorms with lightning in various regions of Himachal Pradesh on April 22 and 23. When there is a yellow alert, there will be really terrible weather for several days. It also implies that a change in the weather might cause daily operations to be disrupted.

During the southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast an above-average rainfall season nationwide.

The seasonal rainfall from June to September is predicted by IMD to be above normal; quantitative calculations suggest that it may reach 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA). This prediction was made earlier this week. The LPA is 87 cm for the years 1971–2020.

The equatorial Pacific area is now experiencing mild El Nino conditions, which coincide with IMD’s announcement. In the early part of the monsoon season, El Nino conditions are expected to decline to neutral El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions, according to the most recent estimates from the Monsoon Mission Climate Forecast System (MMCFS) and other climate models.

IMD stated in a news statement that the snow cover extent in the northern hemisphere has been below average for the past three months, from January to March 2024. Such departures from the average for the amount of snow cover might have an impact on weather patterns, notably the impending monsoon season.
