All societal groups, regardless of their religious beliefs, will be treated equally under a national civil code that will be applied to all in a uniform manner.

Silchar: According to minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, the Assam state cabinet on Saturday talked about introducing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, but no decision was made at that time.

Mallabaruah made a hint earlier on Saturday that the UCC will be among the significant topics of discussion in the state cabinet meeting that is planned for the evening. According to him, there might be some relief for the UCC’s tribal population.

Chief Minister Himanat Biswa Sarma said earlier this month that while his government will execute the UCC, the tribal community will not be covered by it.

A national civil code that applies to all will be uniformly applied to all segments of society, regardless of their faith. This is known as a uniform civil code.

Earlier, Sarma had stated that his administration is keeping a close eye on the Uttarakhand government’s UCC draft bill to see if it may be adopted in the northeastern states.

The state government was reliant on Uttarakhand’s decision, according to the chief minister. “While we are eager to implement UCC in Assam, we must first see the UCC bill from the Uttarakhand government.”

After a full day of debate, the Uttrakhand state assembly ratified the UCC Bill on February 7, making it the first nation to do so.

Sarma and other ministers, including Mallabaruah and Pijush Hazarika, attended the Assam cabinet meeting, which began at around 7 p.m. on Saturday. The chief minister disclosed the decisions made after the meeting, which continued till 9:30 p.m., but Mallabaruah stated UCC was not one of them.

After the meeting, Mallabaruah addressed the media, saying, “Issues

such as polygamy and UCC, about which there are several conversations. Perhaps by the time the budget session ends, UCC will appear.

He stated that significant decisions will be made for the sake of the nation whenever Narendra Modi is elected to a third consecutive term as prime minister.

The Assam Legislative Assembly’s budget session began on February 5 and will end on February 28. This session is anticipated to see the placement of 11 bills in total, some of which have already been placed.

The minister stated that the cabinet has adopted the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill 2024, which makes the use of traditional magical ways to heal congenital disorders such as autism, deformities, dumbness, and blindness illegal.
