Why the US and Israel Chose Saturday Morning to Strike Iran: Intelligence on Khamenei Triggered Operation

US Israel Strike on Iran

Surprise Timing Based on Intelligence

The United States and Israel reportedly launched a coordinated air and naval operation against Iran early Saturday after intelligence indicated that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was holding a high-level meeting with senior advisers.

According to reports citing US officials, the operation was accelerated to preserve the element of surprise. There were concerns that if Khamenei became aware of the impending strike, he might relocate to a secure undisclosed site.

Originally, the meeting was expected to take place Saturday evening in Tehran. However, Israeli intelligence reportedly detected activity earlier in the day, prompting military planners to move the strike window to Saturday morning.

High-Security Compound Targeted

Sources said Khamenei’s high-security compound in Tehran was among the first targets hit during the operation. Satellite imagery reportedly confirmed significant destruction at the site.

If confirmed, the strike marks a dramatic escalation in regional tensions and a potential turning point in Iran’s 46-year Shia theocratic rule.

Iran’s Immediate Retaliation

Soon after the attack began, Iran launched waves of drones and missiles targeting Israel and several regional locations, including Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Kuwait.

Iran’s powerful military wing, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), vowed severe retaliation, calling the response “the most ferocious offensive operation in history” against the US and Israel.

In an official statement, the IRGC said those responsible would face “decisive punishment.”

Trump’s Reaction and Diplomatic Context

The strike reportedly began shortly after midnight Washington time — daytime in Iran — just two days after inconclusive negotiations in Geneva mediated by Oman.

Former US President Donald Trump reacted strongly on social media, making remarks about Khamenei’s reported death.

Other Senior Officials Reported Killed

Israel claimed that along with Khamenei, key figures including Ali Shamkhani and IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpour were killed.

However, senior Iranian politician Ali Larijani reportedly survived and issued a defiant statement, vowing that Iran would deliver an “unforgettable lesson” to its adversaries.

Iranian state media later confirmed Khamenei’s death, broadcasting archival footage with mourning symbols. He had led the country since 1989, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

Why Saturday Morning?

Strategic analysts suggest three key reasons:

  1. Element of Surprise – Acting before Khamenei could relocate.

  2. Intelligence Window – Real-time confirmation of a high-level leadership meeting.

  3. Operational Advantage – Coordinated timing across US and Israeli forces to maximize impact and minimize counter-preparation.
