Providence, Rhode Island | Dec. 13 : A tragic mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday afternoon has left two people dead and nine others injured, prompting a campus-wide lockdown as law enforcement continues to search for the suspect.
University officials confirmed that two of the deceased and eight of the injured are Brown University students. The shooting occurred inside the Barus and Holley Engineering Building, located at 184 Hope Street, during a busy exam period.

What Happened
According to Providence Police, the first emergency call was received around 4:05 p.m. At the time, final exam review sessions were underway, resulting in a large number of students inside the building.
A suspect entered a first-floor classroom, reportedly shouted something, and opened fire. Students attempted to flee or take cover as shots were fired.

Suspect Description
Police have released limited details about the shooter:
- Male
- Believed to be in his 30s
- Wearing all black or dark, baggy clothing
- Possibly wearing a mask or hat
Authorities also released a video showing the suspect walking down Hope Street shortly after the shooting. He remains not in custody.
Campus on Lockdown
Brown University’s Department of Public Safety issued a campus-wide alert at 4:22 p.m., instructing students and staff to:
“Run, hide, and fight (as a last resort)”

- Students and staff are instructed to shelter in place unless escorted by police

An additional victim initially fled the scene and later realized they were injured by shrapnel, officials said.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that there is no credible evidence of an ongoing threat, urging residents not to cancel events while assuring increased police presence across the city.
