New Delhi, May 9, 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convened an emergency meeting on Thursday evening to discuss the future of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, as geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan escalated earlier this week.
According to sources within the board, the meeting was called in response to growing security concerns raised by several franchises and international cricket boards regarding the safety of foreign players currently participating in the tournament. Discussions centered around contingency planning, including the possibility of postponement, relocation of matches, and the repatriation of overseas players.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah addressed the media following the meeting, stating:
“The safety and security of players, staff, and fans remain our top priority. Given the current situation, we are evaluating all options, including temporary suspension of the tournament. We are in constant touch with government authorities and security agencies.”
The BCCI has reportedly asked franchises to prepare for the immediate return of foreign players, should the situation worsen. While no official announcement has been made about a complete suspension, several matches have already been put on hold as a precaution.
The decision has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, with many players, fans, and stakeholders expressing concern over the uncertainty surrounding the remainder of the tournament. If suspended, this would mark only the second time in IPL history that the tournament has faced a major interruption after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
More updates are expected in the coming days as the BCCI continues to assess the ground situation in coordination with national security agencies.
